ViewPointNigeria profiles the state of a section of the Panyam-Shendam road, by Poediel village in Shendam LGA. The section of the road bears a massive ditch which has become a death trap for commuters. See attached pictures.
Completed in 2006 by the Federal Government during the Obasanjo administration, the road served as a major gateway into Southern Plateau – especially for commuters going to Shendam, Quanpan and Mikang Local Government Areas. The Pankshin-Langtang road which had been the only good access road into Southern Plateau at the time, witnesssed significantly lighter traffic following the completion of the Panyam-Shendam road, because commuters favoured it for the fact that it was much shorter.
Over the past few years however, sections of the road have suffered severe neglect and abandonement. ViewPointNigeria has profiled a massive gully erosion which is eating deep into a section of the road. Several accidents and deaths have been said to have occured due to this erosion, but the relevant authorities have looked the other way and pretended not to notice.
So we ask -who is responsible for fixing this road? Is the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) aware of this? What have the authorities of Shendam LGA done about this? Who is the House Member representing this area? How many more people have to die before this is sorted?
