The ravaging effects of the coronavirus pandemic has made Nations put in place stringent measures to curtail the spread of the novel COVID-19.
Globally, total cases are over 1.6 million with over 100,000 deaths recorded. In this figures, Nigeria has 288 total cases and 7 deaths recorded nationally with 17 States including the Federal Capital with confirmed cases.
The States yet to record any confirm case have continue to deploy measures to prevent or contain any possible outbreak.
Plateau State falls within the category of States without any confirmed case and government and critical stakeholders in the State have continue to work towards ensure a coronavirus-free Plateau State.
Plateau State on Monday 6th April, 2020 ordered a total lockdown which commenced Thursday Midnight 9th to Wednesday 15th April, 2020.
Hon. Fom Dalyop Gwottson Member representing Jos South Constituency in Plateau State House of Assembly commended the lockdown directive of government and said it was long overdue.
He commended his Constituents for full compliance but was quick to call on the government at all levels to provide palliatives that will cushion the effect of the hardship the people are going through.
He said His Constituents are yet to benefit from the N20,000 COVID-19 Funds by the Federal Government and posited that no welfare intervention has reached them from the State government.
When asked what he has done to his Constituents, he said he has assisted the people with food items and PPE to ameliorate their sufferings.
“Assisting the people is my passion and I get fulfilled doing that” he said.
He said full compliance may not be guaranteed if palliatives are not made available.
He said hunger crisis and malnutrition are imminent among the poor if nothing is done.
He expressed disappoint at the fumigation of the State saying the timing is wrong.
“How can you be fumigating places in the rains, how effective is that considering that the rain will wash away the chemicals to the streams which may potent health danger to those who use water from such source for consumption” he said.
He called on the State Governor to ensure accountability and transparency in spendings at this critical period.
“The State House of Assembly has not received any proposal for expenditure on the fumigation from the Executive Arm” he said.
Hon. Gwottson called on his Constituents to adhere strictly to all preventive tips advised by health professionals and government directives which he said are for public health.
