Mr Ezekiel Mandyau, Management Committee Chairman, Barkin-Ladi Local Government of Plateau has applauded President Muhammadu Buhari’s planned succur for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) across the country in the wake of the dreaded Coronavirus pandemic.
Mandyau gave the commendation on Tuesday in an interview with Newsmen in his office in Barkin-Ladi.
President Buhari had in his nationwide broadcast last Sunday announced the Government planned palliatives for all IDPs across the country as succur to the challenges posed by the COVID-19.
“The president’s pronouncement came to us in Barkin-Ladi as a great and cheering news considering the plights our IDPs are in right now.
“”The series of dastardly attacks on several villages and Communities in our LGA, has Displaced over 3,000 innocent people, who spread across seven IDPs camps.
“Although officials of NEMA and SEMA had visited all the camps and had promised to return with some relief materials especially what could assist them rebuild their destroyed houses, we have not seen them yet.
“As a Council, we had went round the IDPs and pleaded with them with them to return to their destroyed Communities to rebuild and restart a new living,” he stated.
The Chairman said, “to our surprise and gladness, shortly before Christmas, they all left the camps and went back to their respective dilapidated communities and villages.”
Mandyau said that the fear of the Council and Government is how the IDPs could curb in face of threat of the COVID-19, which demands social distancing and prudent hygiene.
The LG boss noted that the President palliatives to the IDPs would go along way at salvaging the vulnerable IDPs from the COVID-19 pendemic.
According to him, “as a Council, we have taken some drastic measures to ensure that the disease doesn’t come around us here so as not to jeopardize the lives of our citizens.”
