Authorities in Benin republic say a coup attempt to oust President Yayi Boni has been foiled by Government forces. The Government spokesperson on Sunday said that the coup plotters wanted to install a military regime.

State prosecutor Justin Gbenameto said a military officer, Colonel Pamphile Zomahoun and businessman Johannes Dagnon have been arrested for trying to block the president from returning back to Cotonou . Investigation into the alleged coup is still on-going.

Dr Thomas Yayi Boni was first elected president of the West African Country in April 2006 and was re-elected for a second term in March 2011.
