The Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM) has rejected allegations made by the Plateau State chapter of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) concerning the killing of a herder in Gyel District of Jos South Local Government Area.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong, and made available to journalists on Saturday, the association described MACBAN’s claims as misleading and inconsistent with accounts from members of the affected community.
According to BYM, armed attackers suspected to be Fulani terrorists took advantage of an early morning rainfall on Friday, June 5, 2026, to launch an attack on residents of Gyel who had gone out in search of their daily livelihood.
The association stated that the attack resulted in the death of a community member identified as Mr. Jan, while another resident, Mr. Silvanus Toma, sustained a gunshot injury to the head and is currently receiving treatment at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), where he remains in critical condition.
BYM condemned the killing and other acts of violence, stressing that every loss of innocent life is regrettable regardless of ethnicity, religion, or occupation.
The association, however, faulted what it described as attempts to distort the facts surrounding the incident, criminalize entire communities, and ignore the suffering of indigenous residents who have continued to face violent attacks.
It called on security agencies to conduct a comprehensive, impartial, and professional investigation into the incident and ensure that all those responsible are identified and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
BYM also urged stakeholders to exercise restraint and avoid issuing premature or inflammatory statements capable of escalating tensions and undermining ongoing security efforts in the area.
Reaffirming its commitment to peace, the association stated that the Berom people remain dedicated to lawful conduct and harmonious coexistence with all law-abiding residents of Plateau State.
