Akims James Mamot: A dogged Young Politician with a difference in Plateau

By Pam Moses

Once in a while, Mangu LGA of Plateau state, is confronted with security issues. The once peaceful area has a diverse population of people of different religion settings and culture, but all the while the inhabitants have always co-existed peacefully over time.

Under the current Democratic experience, attacks have been experienced in the villages and the authorities have always been on their toes to bring back hope to the once peaceful area.

It was as a result of these, a young man; known for his philanthropic qualities and by extension: leadership skills has made moves to make a difference when he made effort to provide drones and walkie talkies to the securities in government and places of worships.

That singular gesture endeared the young politician in the minds of many who, despite the fact he is yet to chart a way for his political ambition in 2023, saw in him a material to rely on.

For those who are conversant with Mangu town which is also the headquarters of the Council will always associate a particular area of the town known as Angwan Mata as the “Ajegunle” of the Council.

This area; which houses the divisional police headquarters in the LGA has overtime, been known for all sorts of “dirty” happenings ranging from prostitution, alcoholism, criminality, fighting and many more because of the number of brothels that were once housed there in the formative period of the area. The trade most women engage in at the time, then was the brewing of the popular local alcohol; “Burkutu and Pito”

Perhaps that is why the mere mention of Angwan Mata; translates that nothing good can come from there, especially the fact that kids that were born and bred in that kind of notoriously characterised location have nothing good to offer, it seemed.

Interestingly, Angwan Mata which translate to an area of “women”, perhaps because of the atrocities associated with the area also helped in defining it as a defiant force for “easy virtue “

However, the face of the “notorious ” Angwan Mata is gradually given way to an area that has the potentials to provide leaders of repute in the state. The kids birthed their have risen to the reality of their lives as efforts are now being intensify to change the narratives by insisting it can be better.

This is so because they have no where to run to, especially when they allow these notoriety to continue and the bad influence it has created in the past. After all, most of those born and bred in the area are not into prostitution, crime or even alcoholism, but because their parents happened to be residents of the area, it is concluded the atrocities are their handiwork.

In all these, the children despite the bad influence they were associated with, never allowed themselves to be deterred as their parents never relented in making sure they join their contemporaries in other section of the town to acquire basic education.

As a result of their struggles, it is heartwarming to see that Angwan Mata is a proud area that can boast of personalities that are contributing to the growth of the state and the country as a whole with youths as Akims James Mamot who is gradually becoming an enigma of a sort.

Sometimes, the sacrifice one pays in aid of his people may not be conscious, but since God is always interested in the dictates of one’s heart, He has a special way of rewarding such gestures.

Apart from the security apparatus that Akims James Mamot has donated, it was gathered that he has in the past, embarked on community projects that have direct bearing on the people especially in Angwan Mata.

He has piloted projects with his little resources in parts of Benue and Kaduna states in the past, and it was the reason the Zaria emirate Council found him worthy and bestowed on him the “Dan Bakon Zazzau” traditional title in appreciation for his feelings for mankind, though the coronation will be held in due course.

Presently, there are three phases of street light projects to his credit having commissioned each at Jwakkas, Derkong and Angwan Mata in Mangu LGA. His neghbouhood has also been a major beneficiary of his self-community initiatives for he has provided clean drinking water and functional drainages.

In education, the first ever ICT e-learning centre he set up five years ago has trained no fewer than 25, 000 youths in ICT and other computer trainings.

The widely traveled Mamot has since been a voice to reckoned with; not only in Angwan Mata but Plateau state as a whole.

He was a onetime special assistant to former governor Jonah Jang and has always been ready to provide succour to the people whenever such needs reared their heads.

With a B.ed in Arabic Language, NCE Arabic social studies; Comr. Akims James Mamot is a detribalize Nigerian who sees unity beyond borders and he is among the first Christian who took bold step to study Arabic Language despite being an Islamic holy language or liturgical language of the Quran.
