Pioneer MD of NOH Jos, Prof. Icha Onche, Inducted into Idoma Hall of Fame

In a landmark celebration of academic brilliance, resilience, and medical excellence, the pioneer Medical Director of the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Jos, Prof. Icha Inalegwu Onche, has been inducted into the prestigious Idoma Hall of Fame.

The historic ceremony, which took place at the Peach Vine Event Centre in Wuye, Abuja, brought together eminent sons, daughters, and dignitaries from across Idoma land and the nation at large. Beyond celebrating exceptional accomplishments, the high-profile gathering served as a powerful rally for unity, cultural pride, and inspiration for the Idoma nation.

Prof. Onche was honored for his historic feat as the first-ever Professor of Orthopaedics in the history of the Idoma Nation, capping off decades of groundbreaking clinical practice, academic leadership, and pioneering contributions to Nigeria’s health sector.

From Childhood Struggles to Medical Distinction
Prof. Onche’s journey to the pinnacle of medicine is a profound story of grace, grit, and triumph over adversity. Born on April 6, 1964, at General Hospital, Otukpo, to the family of the late Chief Entonu Inalegwu Onche (“Entina”) and Mrs. Obo Onche, young Icha faced severe early childhood health challenges.

Diagnosed with a severe orthopaedic deformity (rickets, described as Windswept Deformity), he underwent corrective treatment at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Dala, Kano, in 1968. Despite starting primary education late at L.E.A. School Court, Otukpa, in 1971, where his elder brothers routinely carried him on their backs to school, his academic brilliance remained unhindered.

After exceptional performances at Norcross Primary School and L.E.A. Primary School, Eupi, Otukpo, he proceeded to Federal Government College, Enugu, finishing with an outstanding 9 As. He gained merit admission to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), graduating with a degree in Medicine and Surgery in 1989.

The Career of Surgical Innovation & Academic Leadership

After completing his mandatory NYSC service in Jigawa State, where he earned the 1991 NYSC Merit Award, Prof. Onche joined the University of Jos as a Lecturer II in Human Physiology. Mentored by the late Distinguished Prof. Jonah Isawa Elaigwu and Late Dr. Isaac Igo, he commenced his surgical residency training in 1994, qualifying as an Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon in 2000 through the National Postgraduate Medical College.

Prof. Onche rapidly rose through academic ranks to become a full Professor of Orthopaedics and Trauma on October 1, 2011.

Key Professional Milestones:

Global Exposure: Advanced fellowship trainings in Taiwan (Chang Gung Memorial Hospital), India (Gleneagles Aware Specialist Hospital), and Hungary (St. George’s University Teaching Hospital).

Surgical Expertise: Specialized in Adult Hip, Knee, and Shoulder Replacement and Sports Medicine. He has successfully executed over 700 hip, 600 knee, and 15 shoulder adult joint replacements, alongside more than 2,500 complex trauma operations.

Mentorship: Trained 42 specialist surgeons at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), 10 of whom have since attained the rank of full Professor.

Private Practice Pioneer: Founded Daisyland Orthopaedic and Trauma Hospital Limited, Jos in 2006, one of North-Central Nigeria’s premier specialized centers.

Administrative Stewardship: Served as Pioneer Head of Department of Orthopaedics & Trauma at UniJos/JUTH (2010–2016), Deputy CMAC (2010–2012), and Chairman of the JUTH Procurement Committee (2013–2016).

Scholarly Output: Authored 67 peer-reviewed publications in reputable local and international medical journals, and served as Editor-in-Chief of the Nigerian Journal of Orthopaedic and Trauma (2011–2016).

Presidential Appointment & Divine Grace
On July 4, 2024, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed Prof. Onche as the Pioneer Substantive Medical Director of the newly established National Orthopaedic Hospital, Jos, Plateau State, for an initial four-year tenure.

Reflecting on his induction and presidential appointment, Prof. Onche expressed deep gratitude:

“For a child who was physically challenged and carried on the back by his elder brothers to school, to grow up to become a medical doctor, a Professor of Orthopaedics and Trauma, and now appointed by the President to lead a brand-new National Orthopaedic Hospital, is the ultimate testament to God’s grace and mercy. To Him alone be all the glory.”

Prof. Onche remains an active fellow and member of numerous prestigious national and global medical bodies, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), Société Internationale de Chirurgie Orthopédique et de Traumatologie (SICOT), Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Association, and the Arthroscopic and Sports Medicine Society of Nigeria.
