The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency(NDLEA), Plateau Command, has urged the Plateau Government to enact a law that would prohibit the production of a local brew, popularly called `goskolo.’

Dr Ngozi Madubuike, the NDLEA State Commander, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Jos that the consumption of the local brew was destructive.

Madubuike lamented the devastating effect the local brew had on the health and wellbeing of the youths, noting that most of them committed nefarious acts under the influence of the brew.

The commander added that most of the youths had health challenges such as liver cirrhosis or cancer of the liver because of the acidic nature of the local brew.
“A state law should be made to curb the consumption of this local brew called Goskolo because of its negative potencies to the wellbeing of the individual and the society at large.

“There should be a state law to ban the production; once this is in place NDLEA would have the legal backing to ensure that there is strict compliance and that defaulters are brought to book,” she said.
The commander called on the government to first of all sensitise the people on the ills of consuming the local brew.
She also urged government to provide an alternative source of income for those involved in the production of the local brew.

“NDLEA has conducted various town hall meetings sensitising the people on the ills of producing and consuming goskolo.
“ It is necessary that the state government conducts town hall meetings too, to enlighten the people on the devastating effect of the drink,” she said. (NAN)
