Agatu Council Boss Hon Melvin Ejeh Pledge to Restore Lasting Peace in the LGA

In his determined efforts aimed at restoring total peace in his council, the Executive Chairman of Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State , Hon. James Melvin Ejeh, has again, met with stakeholders in the council’s peace building process.

Our correspondent reports that the high-level peace and security meeting convened at the instance of the chairman,was one of the meetings he has held in quick succession within the short time that he has been in office.

The latest meeting, held at the council’s secretariat, in Obagaji, headquarters of the local government, had in attendance members of traditional councils, youths, security agencies.

Also present at the meeting were members and leaders of Agatu Development Association (Makurdi and Otukpo branches), Agatu Elite Development Forum, Agatu for peace and development forum, Agatu Gboo Gboo Youth Development, Agatu Ladies and Gentlemen, Agatu Stand For Melvin, Save Agatu Project, Agatu Youth Development Forum, Agatu west peace and unity forum, Agatu Women Arise, Agatu Reformation Movement, National Association of Agatu students, Christian Association of Nigeria, and Muslim Community, Agatu chapter and union leaders respectively.

In his welcome remarks at the event, the Chairman explained that the need for all stakeholders to contribute their quarters through sharing their various opinions necessitated his decision to convene the peace summit.

While emphasizing the importance of respecting every opinions, the chairman further explained that the meeting aimed to avail stakeholders the avenue to share their concerns, ideas, and expectations regarding peace and security in Agatu,as well as propose lasting solutions to the insecurity challenges facing the region.

He highlighted the devastating consequences of war, stressing that diplomacy is the most effective approach to resolving disputes.

The chairman reflected on the crisis that ravaged Agatu Local Government in the past, resulting in significant revenue losses, dwindling investments, and school closures.

He thanked the council’s traditional leaders whom he described as the custodians of cultures for their invaluable roles in the relative peace being enjoyed by the people currently, and expressed happiness that his close collaboration with them in decision-making relating to peace and security has yielded significant results.

“Protecting lives and ensuring adequate security for all residents is my administration’s top priority,” he affirmed.

The chairman addressed the sensitive issue of Fulani herdsmen occupying land in Agatu, clarifying no official permission had been granted them to that effect. He explained that most if the herders have settled voluntarily, emphasizing the need for cautious engagement.

The chairman highlighted his administration’s successful implementation of an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR)’s approach in western Agatu. According to him, this initiative enabled displaced persons to return to their ancestral homes, previously occupied by Fulani herdsmen.

“I convened this meeting to listen to your concerns and ideas. Together, we will work towards making Agatu a safer, more prosperous, and harmonious community, ” he assured.

The Agatu council boss commended the invaluable support of Hon. Chief Pastor Ojotu Ojema, Member of the House of Representatives for Apa/Agatu Federal Constituency, and Hon. Sir John Ngbede, for their unwavering commitment and support in the peace-building initiative.

Additionally, he praised Agatu youths for demonstrating remarkable tolerance throughout the peace-building process.

Also speaking at the event, Agatu Youth Chairman, Oloche Silas expressed gratitude for Chairman Ejeh’s tireless efforts. He stated that the community is ready to embrace peace and suggest the formation of a peace committee to ensure that justice is served to those who deserve it.

On his part, Chairman of Agatu West Elders Forum, Colonel Odagbali (Rtd), passed his vote of confidence in Hon. Melvin James Ejeh’s leadership. He praised Ejeh’s dialogue-driven approach, pledging unwavering support and urging him to continue his good work, which aligns with the will of the people.

In the same vein,the President of Agatu Development Association (Makurdi, Otukpo Branches), Mr Matthew Efoga and Hon. Justice Philip, speaking separately, endorsed the suggestion of the peace committee. They stressed the need to protect Agatu people’s interests and restore lasting peace to the local government.

A statement signed by Obochi Solomon , the Chief Press Secretary to Executive Chairman of the Council reads that during the meeting, the Agatu Youth Development Forum, honored Hon. Melvin James Ejeh with a prestigious award of excellence, in recognition of his exceptional peace building initiatives in Agatu Local Government.

The forum members particularly praised his Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR)’s approach, describing it as a game-changer for Agatu, particularly during this challenging period.

Representatives from the 10 council wards and various groups present, appreciated the practical demonstration of Chairman Ejeh’s commitment to restoring peace in Agatu.

They pledged their wholehearted cooperation to the Agatu government’s efforts to promote peace and unity in Agatu.

The high point of the meeting was the resolution to constitute a committee that would guide the peace process, expose the perpetrators of the crisis, and ultimately put an end to the long-standing farmers and herders’ crisis in Agatu Local Government.

In response to suggestions from the community leaders, the chairman approved the establishment of a 23-man peace committee. This committee will work tirelessly to maintain peace and security in Agatu, ensuring that the community remains a safe and harmonious place for all.

Earlier, the Agatu Council Chairman formally condoled with the people of Abugbe community over the tragic incident that occurred last week, claiming the lives of two people. He urged them to embrace peace and coexist peacefully.
