The Plateau Cultural Carnival team has officially announced the 2024 edition of the highly anticipated cultural event, scheduled for December 30–31.
At a press briefing held at Kayrocks, Tudun Wada, Jos, the team unveiled this year’s theme: “Celebrating Unity in Diversity.” The carnival will spotlight Plateau State’s rich cultural heritage while promoting harmony among its more than 50 ethnic groups.
Debra Jalmet, President of the Plateau Cultural Carnival, highlighted the significance of the event in preserving cultural identity and boosting tourism in the state.
“This carnival is a platform to preserve our heritage, foster unity, and project Plateau as a global cultural hub,” she stated.
Key activities include a vibrant cultural parade from Secretariat Junction to the carnival village at Crest Hotel, exhibitions of traditional food and art, dance and drama performances, and a Gala Night to honor individuals and organizations advancing Plateau’s cultural and artistic scene.
Loretta Gambo, Regional Customer Head of MultiChoice Nigeria, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, emphasizing the importance of promoting Plateau’s culture through platforms like DStv and ShowMax.
“This is an opportunity to change the narrative about Plateau and highlight the artisans, vendors, and cultural diversity the state offers,” Gambo noted, reaffirming MultiChoice’s support with airtime on African Magic and ShowMax.
Speaking on behalf of the Plateau State government, Mr. Atsen Jacob, Head of Festival at the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Hospitality, applauded the carnival’s alignment with the ministry’s goals of preserving and promoting local culture.
“This event is vital for connecting the people and changing negative narratives about Plateau State. The government is committed to supporting its success,” he affirmed.
Toyin Phyllis Wiggins, Cultural Ambassador for the Yoruba team, underscored the importance of collaboration in sustaining the carnival’s impact. “Unity cannot be achieved by one person alone. We need your voices, platforms, and resources to keep showcasing Plateau to the world,” she urged.
The Plateau Cultural Carnival has grown significantly since its inception, drawing over 10,000 participants in the 2022 edition.
This year’s event promises to be even grander, with a focus on celebrating the unity and diversity that define Plateau State.
