Annual Range Classification Exercise Climaxed at 3 Division Nigerian Army Jos

The 3 Division Nigerian Army has successfully concluded its Second Schedule Annual Range Classification exercise for 2024 at the Small Arms Fire Range in Miango, Plateau State. The event, organized for officers and soldiers of the 3 Division Headquarters and its affiliated formations and units, marks a critical component of the Nigerian Army’s biannual training schedule.

The exercise was hosted and closely monitored by Major General AE Abubakar, General Officer Commanding 3 Division and Commander of Operation SAFE HAVEN. The range classification is a routine activity aimed at assessing the serviceability of the Army’s weapons and evaluating the proficiency of personnel in weapon handling and firing efficiency. This exercise, the second of the year, complements the earlier one conducted to meet the Nigerian Army’s training directives, which mandate that formations and units must classify twice annually.

The Range Classification exercise serves as a platform to test the battle readiness of troops, ensuring they are well-prepared for deployment in combat or internal security operations. The exercise also aims to enhance marksmanship skills, reduce casualties, and minimize ammunition wastage during engagements.

The event also fostered inter-agency collaboration, with security agencies, government officials, traditional rulers, retired senior officers, Corps members, and media representatives participating in novelty shooting exercises. This inclusion of diverse participants strengthens civil-military relations and offers civilians a first-hand experience of military training.

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, represented by Brigadier General Gakji Shipi (rtd), Special Adviser on Security and Homeland Safety, emphasized the importance of such exercises in enhancing the skills and confidence of security personnel. “This exercise sharpens the shooting skills and weapon-handling abilities of our security agencies, which is crucial for maintaining public safety,” he said. Governor Mutfwang also expressed confidence that the well-trained personnel would significantly contribute to the security of the state.

In light of recent attacks in Bokkos LGA, where seven people lost their lives, General Shipi reassured the public that security forces are actively pursuing those responsible for the violence. He noted that while the situation in Plateau State has been relatively calm, the recent attacks underscore the importance of ongoing vigilance and preparedness.

Brigadier General John Timlong (rtd) also highlighted the significance of the range classification in the armed forces, stressing that proficiency in weapon use is fundamental to a soldier’s effectiveness in combat. He praised the 3 Division for maintaining this essential tradition, which not only improves combat readiness but also plays a role in the promotion process within the military.

The event concluded with novelty shooting exercises with weapons fired by the officers and invited guests at the occasion included AK-47 rifle, FN Rifle and pistol., presentations of souvenirs, group photographs, and a declaration exercise where participants confirmed they had no live rounds or empty casings in their possession.
