“Drugs and hard substance abuse one of the factors responsible for high crime rate in the society” – Nrs Kizito Ndak
Aside poverty and unemployment, drug abuse and intake of other hard substances have been identified by experts as one of the major factors responsible for the high crime rate in the society.
While drug abuse and consumption of hard substances are said to alter the mental state of an individual, available records showed that 14.4% of Nigerians between the age of 15-65 Years abuse illicit drugs.
These disclosures were made by Nrs Kizito Ndak, an Addiction Therapist who is among the Resource Persons at the four-day Workshop organized by Zishiya Empowerment Foundation in collaboration with the Plateau State Local Government Service Commission on the management of substance abuse in workplace: challenges and prospects.
“The high rate of crime in our society is associated with drug abuse” he said.
Nrs Kizito hinted that multiple drug abuse was significantly associated with younger age group.
He said the rate of drugs and hard substances abuse as well as their adverse effects on the society and lives of those who indulge in same are worrisome and calls for serious concern.
He posited that all hands must be on deck and concerted efforts deployed to curb drug and hard substance abuse in the society.
He said the consequences of drug abuse such as liver cirrhosis, lungs and kidney failure are devastating.
He urged the participants to advise pregnant Women and Breastfeeding Mothers to abstain from drug and hard substance abuse as their unborn/developing children may be victims of the consequences of same at their formative stage in life.
The Executive Director of Zishiya Empowerment Foundation, Mrs. Violet Adama Kaburuk said the essence of the workshop is to build the capacity of the Participants and equip them to have better understanding and approach in tackling drug and hard substance abuse.
She said drug abuse is a menace and adversely affecting the society, hence the need to train the Participants who in turn will step down what they will learn to their various Local Government Areas which will in turn have a multiplying effect to the communities.
She said a lot need to be done to combat drug abuse and hard substances consumption. She called on government at all levels and spirited individuals to intensify efforts towards addressing the menace.
“We intend to see significant impact from this workshop as the Participants step down what they will learn all through the period” she said.
She said the Foundation will continue to contribute its quota in impacting lives and the society positively.
Other resource Persons to take the Participants on other wide range of topics on management of drug abuse and hard substances are Dr. Patience Oche of the Department of Family Medicine Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), Dr. Sesan A. Peter of the Centre for Conflict Management & Peace Studies University of Jos and Prof. Moses D. Audu a Consultant Psychiatrist and Director Quintessential Healthcare Centre Jos.
Participants were drawn from the Health and Social Service Departments of the 17 Local Government Areas of the State.
The Participants lauded the Foundation and government for the training and promise to put what they are being taught to proper use for the benefit of the society.
