Following the global outbreak of the Coronavirus that has infected hundreds of thousands and killed many, Nations of the World and States in Nigeria have resorted to safety and precautionary measures to forestall the spread of the diseases.

Plateau State Government though without a confirmed case employed proactive measures aimed at curtailing and containing the pandemic as well as put in place taskforce to enforce full compliance of the directives.

The Taskforce saddled with the responsibility of ensuring compliance across the State swung into action and clamped down on schools, markets and other business concerns for flouting government directives.

Traders in terminus market, Bukuru Markets and other parts of Jos/Bukuru Metropolis were not left out.

Among the Schools clamped down was Champions Academy Tudun Wada where it was observed that the School was still in session, thereby violating the measures put in place by government in order to safeguard the lives of the people.

Reacting to the situation, the Plateau State Commissioner of Information and Communications, Hon. Dan Manjang who was accompanied by the Commissioner of Secondary Education, Hon. Mrs Elizabeth Wapmuk expressed dismay over what he termed abuse of government directive and putting the lives of innocent children at risk of the dreaded disease. He cautioned the Proprietress of the School saying appropriate sanctions will be meted out and disclosed that the taskforce will continue to work to ensure full compliance to enhance the safety of the people.

Hon. Manjang said government will not fold its arm and watch people flouting the directives aimed at securing and safeguarding the people against the global pandemic.

On Tuesday 24th March, 2020 in a State broadcast, the Executive Governor of Plateau State, Rt. Hon. Simon Bako Lalong gave the following directives:

“The Governor and government of Plateau State is directing all markets to close effective 25th March 2020. Only traders selling food items, pharmaceuticals and cooking gas are to remain open.

In addition, all street trading, street hawking, and begging are prohibited.

The weekly Sunday markets at Ahmadu Bello Way, Bukuru and environs are hereby banned.

Social joints, Nightclubs, drinking parlours are to also close effective Wednesday 25th March 2020, while restaurants are advised to prepare take away for their customers to avoid crowding.”

“With more cases recorded in Nigeria and based on advice of experts, I directed the closure of all schools from pre-primary to tertiary level in the State from Saturday 21st March 2020.”
