By Golok Nanmwa,Jos
Plateau state Government on Sunday said it has noticed the flagrant disregard and disrespect of the measures by some individuals and groups in the state to curtail the spread of the Covid 19 pandemic .
Our correspondent recalled that the Plateau government on Friday directed residents of Plateau to suspend celebration of cultural festivals and anniversaries and directed all worship centres to ensure spacing of not less than 2 metres between seats and to provide running water, soap, and sanitisers at their entrances.
Dan Manjang, Commissioner,
Information and Communication of the state in a statement made available to newsmen in Jos reads that “Critical stake holders of Plateau State comprising Traditional Rulers ably led by His Majesty, Da Jacob Gyang Buba, the Gbong Gwom Jos and Chairman, Plateau State Council of Chiefs and Emirs; Religious Leaders; CAN and JNI leadership; Various women and youth groups and Professional bodies as well as the Chief Medical Director of Jos University Teaching Hospital, Professor Edmund Banwat and his Plateau State Specialist Hospital counterpart, Dr Philemon Golwa; Elders and many more convened recently.
The statement reads that “the gathering brainstormed on the Pandemic Corona Virus Code named COVID 19 that is ravaging the world and took far reaching precautionary measures to safeguard against possible occurance of the disease in the State.
However, the State Government has noticed the flagrant disregard and disrespect of the measures by some individuals and groups in the state.
Of particular note is the non compliance of the outright suspension of anniversaries and cultural festivals.
It is in this light therefore, that government frowns at this attitude.
Government therefore by this notice, calls such groups and individuals to desist from disrespect to constituted authority and comply forthwith. Failure to do so will attract appropriate sanctions by government.
Though Government is aware of the rights of people to assemble, such rights may not be exercised in view of the danger it posses to the generality of the people and even organizers of such events.
