PROFILE OF MAJ. GEN. NUHU ANGBAZO

Major General Nuhu E Angbazo, MSS, psc(+), rcds, MIAD (ABU), MA (International Security and Strategy) Kings College – London

Major General Nuhu E Angbazo was born in Keffi Nasarawa State Nigeria on 29 January 1967 to HRH Dr Bala Angbazo MFR and late Mrs Paulina Ladi Angbazo (of blessed memory) both from Awayi, Nasarawa-Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
Nuhu started his early education at Kent Academy, Miango, Plateau State from 1973 – 1983. In 1983 he transferred to Baptist High School Jos where he sat for his WAEC.

His sterling leadership qualities early in his life came to light for as a house captain in his final year, he left his mark by ensuring that his house ‘Naragata House’ was champion House. In 1984 he gained admission into the Nigerian Defence Academy as a member of 36 Regular Course and he graduated in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Military History.

He obtained a master in International Affairs and Diplomacy from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria in 2004. He also has a Master degree in International Security Studies from King’s College – London.
Nuhu enrolled in the Defence Academy (NDA) as officer cadet
on 23 September 1984. In NDA, he won a Blue in Basketball (award given to an outstanding sportsman). He rose to become the Cadets Regimental Quartermaster and later the Regimental Sergeant Major in Burma Battalion.

Major General Nuhu Angbazo was commissioned into the Nigeria Army Armoured Corps on 24 September 1989 in the rank of Second Lieutenant. Since his commission in 1989, Major General Angbazo has attended several courses these include;
1. Young Officers Course (Armour).
2. Young Officers Course (Infantry).
3. Company Commanders Course (Armour).
4. Tank Weapon’s Instructors Course.
5. Air Defence Platoon Commander’s Course.
6. Junior Division Course Armed Forces Command and Staff College Jaji- Kaduna.
7. Range Management (Basic) Course.
8. Range Management (Advance) Course.
9. Senior Division Course Armed Forces Command and Staff College Jaji- Kaduna.
10. Computer Appreciation and System Analysis.
11. Executive Seminar on Domestic Operations.
12. Managing Defence in the Wider Security Context (MDWSC)-Defence Academy (UK).
13. Royal College of Defence Studies – London.
In all these courses he performed remarkably well and was always in the top bracket.
In his military service, he has held several appointments as an Instructor, on the Staff, and in Command. On commission, he served as the Adjutant of 231 Tank Battalion, 211 Tank Battalion respectively between 1989 – 1997. He was also an Instructor in the Weapons Department of Armoured Corps Centre and School, Bauchi from 1997-1999 and also an Instructor and Company Commander at the Nigerian Military School, Zaria from 2001 – 2003. He has had operational experiences. He participated in United Nations Mission in Somalia (UNISOM II) as a Platoon Commander between March 1994 – November 1994. He also served in United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) where he was engaged in liaison with and establishing amicable relations with ex-combatants during the disarmament phase of the mission. He also held the appointment of the Military Assistant to the Deputy Force Commander – UNAMSIL between 1999-2001.
Major General Angbazo was the Secretary of Nigerian Army Training Centre (NATRAC) and was instrumental for the detailed reconnaissance, layout and transformation of the dormant Kontagora Training Area into the army training centre, where the Army now annually hosts its exercises. He was a Directing Staff (DS) in the Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC) Jaji – Nigeria before his posting to the Office of the Chief of Defence Staff. He served on the Committee of the Nigerian Army in the Next Decade, (the Army’s Transformation effort). General Nuhu was one of the survivors of the ill-fated plane crash of 17 September 2006 which involved senior military officers on their way for a retreat on the Nigerian Army Transformation. He was the Principal Staff Officer (Army) to the Chief of Defence Staff (Nigeria). He attended the prestigious Royal College of Defence Studies – London where he won the Strategic Leadership Award. He was recently on committees assigned with different tasks. These include, Member of NA ORBAT 2010 Review Committee on 26 Mar 14; Member of Steering Committee of Civil-Military Cooperation and Observance of Human Rights, anchored by ONSA in Sep 14 and Committee to Articulate Inputs for the 20 Years Development Plan for the Nigerian Army 2014- 2030. He represented Nigeria at the 2014 COE Working Group Meeting in UN HQ New York 18 Jan – 2 Feb 14. He was Deputy Director Force Generation (DD FG), and also the Director Peacekeeping Operations Army Headquarters. Major General Angbazo is one of the major contributors in the fight against terrorism in the northeast, it was notable during the period he was acting Director, Operations.
General Angbazo also served as Defence Attacheè to Mali with concurrent accreditation to Gambia, Senegal, Mauritania, Cape Vade and Western Sahara between August 2015 and February 2017, where he brought positive impact on the effectiveness of the diplomatic body for peace and conflict resolution.
Gen Angbazo was appointed Chief of Civil-Military Affairs in February 2017 and since assumption of office, he has galvanized the activities of the department with it’s robust and bold engagement of the civil populace both within and outside the shores of the country
His military award includes Distinguished Service Star (DSS) and Pass Staff College – Dagga (psc+). Strategic Leadership Award from the RCDS – London for the officer who has distinguished himself and has shown the greatest potential as a strategic leader of the future. His hobbies include reading, wildlife study, early morning walks and he has acquired a new hobby of writing.

Major General Angbazo is happily married to Doctor Dorcas Angbazo and blessed with three boys and a girl.
