The Plateau state chapter of the National Union of Teachers (NUT) have rejected the calls for Local Government autonomy saying that their conditions will worsened if it gets approved.
State Chairman of NUT, Mr Gunshin Yarling was speaking in Jos on Thursday during a press briefing at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Plateau State council. He said that teachers are already facing financial challenges with the various state Governments and will be worst with the Local Governments.

Yarling said that there was a near total collapse of primary education when the Local Governments were in charge despite the fact that the allocation was increased from 15 to 20 per cent. He added that the Local Government don’t take education as a priority.
The NUT Chairman called on Plateau state Government to call on the state legislature to reject the bill seeking financial autonomy for the Local councils in the country. He said that the body also supports the call for the scraping of joint accounts for states and Local Governments while the account should be maintained by the State Government.
