JANG EFCC TRAVAILS: UNWITTING POLITICAL MUDSLINGING – DENIS YILLAH

A philanthropist and founder Yillah foundation, Mr Dennis Yillah has faulted the clampdown on opposition by the APC led administration of General Muhammadu Buhari, using the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in the guise of fighting corruption.

In a statement signed by Chairman Yillah foundation and made available to newsmen online, the Europe based business magnet described the recent detention of the former Plateau state governor and senator representing Plateau North at the National Assembly, Da Jonah David Jang by the EFCC as a political witch hunt aimed at fizzling the presidential aspiration of the distinguished senator, which is gaining momentum by the day.

According to Yillah, APC is perturbed by its dwindling fortunes among Nigerian citizenry due to the gross incompetence exhibited by the party in managing affairs of the country since coming to power three years ago, and resorted to silencing strong opposition voices with trumped up charges of graft.

According to him, “we are aware that Baba Jang had been invited severally by the anti-graft agency, which he honoured and came out clean in all of those occasions, for the agency to now detain the former governor with the view to charging him to court several years after the allegations was brought to their notice smacks of sheer political mudslinging and baseless accusations, bearing in mind that the same agency had sometimes in the past awarded the same Jang as the most transparent governor in Nigeria”.

He further argued that it is self contradictory for the same antigraft agency to turn around and accuse the former governor of any financial wrongdoing after they had confronted him with the same allegations earlier and were satisfied with his defence and asked him to leave.

“Nothing could have prompted the recent onslaught on Jang by the EFCC other than his declaration to contest for the seat of the president against Buhari in 2019, and his intimidating track record of performance and transparency in his previous undertakings as former military governor of the defunct Gondola and Benue states, and the democratic governor of Plateau state between 2007-2015, which placed him in a better stead to outdo Buhari’s integrity”, the statement added.

According to the statement, Nigerians were earlier warned by the national leadership of the PDP of a grand design by the APC to clampdown on opposition members in the build up to the 2019 elections, using the EFCC and other security agencies on trumped up charges with the view to weakening the opposition, positing that Jang’s ordeals in the hands of the EFCC operatives is a manifestation of such diabolical motive.

The statement expressed confidence in the judiciary as the bastion of democracy and the last hope of the oppressed under the tyrannical APC administration of President Buhari, to give Senator Jang a clean bill of health after the whole trial.
