The member representing Barkin Ladi /Riyom federal constituency, Hon. ID Gyang on Saturday donated relief materials worth millions of Naira to victims of insurgency attacks in his Constituency.
While presenting the items, at the community hall in Riyom, ID Gyang said that the aimed of distributing the variety of food items is to helped cushion the effects of the long suffering endured by the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPS). He said that the distribution of the second phase came at the point when the IDPs were consolidating on the peace gained and were gradually returning to their normal life.
His words “We give God the glory that the distribution is under a more peaceful environment, we hope that this round of relief materials will help boost the ongoing efforts to return the IDPs who are living with their relatives and friends in various communities to return to their homes, we give God all the glory that peace is gradually returning in our Constituency.” While praying that peace fully return, the legislator warned against cases of isolated killings and attacks still ongoing in some of the communities.
Gyang commended the efforts of the National Refugees Commission for their support and quick intervention in ensuring that the provision of the food items was made possible. “I want to appreciate the National Refugees Commission for their support and for hearing my cry on the plight of the IDPs in my Constituency.”
He advocated more support from the federal government in other areas of need such as the reconstruction and resettlement initiative to help the IDPs return to their communities. According to him representatives from about 75 communities in Barkin Ladi and Riyom local government areas are present at the hand-over ceremony to collect their share of the food items.
Speaking the Commissioner of the Refugees Commission, Hajiya Sadiya Umar commended ID Gyang for his commitments in ensuring that the commission approved the released and delivery of the items, noting that this is just the beginning as the commission will be willing to donate more items base on request.
Represented by the Commission’s Director of administration and finance, Alh. Ahmed Bashir, the Commissioner want to discourage the presentation of food items and start donating items that will be of economic benefit to the people. The items that were distributed includes, rice, millet and maize.
