6 Killed as miners clash in Gyero, Plateau State

News reaching ViewPointNigeria indicates that 6 persons were killed in a clash between illegal miners in Gyero village of Gyel District in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State on Wednesday.

It was a clash over the ownership of a lucrative mining well, which saw miners from Gyel and others from Miango district of Bassa LGA engage in a bloody dispute.

Speaking with an anonymous miner, he said four persons were killed and dumped into a mining pond as people fled from the scene of the clash for safety.

He said he escaped narrowly as a group of youths chased people in the mining camps with daggers and weapons.

He said that, “when two people were killed from Gyel community, youths from the area quickly mobilized and killed three persons from Miango before the Military intervened”.

The Plateau State Police Commissioner, Mr. Peter Ogunyanwo, confirmed that 6 persons were killed, three from each of the communities during an argument in a mining camp.

Ogunyanwo said it took the intervention of the Special Task Force (STF), Military from the Rukuba Barracks and the Police to restore peace in the area.

The Police Chief urged the warring communities to sheath their sword and embrace peace.

The Police Commissioner warned that anybody caught in the scene of the crisis would be arrested.
