Commmunity leaders must educate their people on the need to avoid building collapse – JT Useni.
Sen Jeremiah Timbut Useni has called on community leaders to educate their citizens on how to ensure safer buildings to avoid further loss of lives through building collapse.
Useni made the call on Tuesday in Jos when he led his deputy , Dr James Dalok and some party officials and supporters to the site of the collapsed three storey building at Saraki Street in Jos North Local Government Area.
He extended his consolation to the families of the 10 dead people and those who are being treated for injuries sustained in the incident.
“This is a sorry situation. While we pray that this does not happen again, we must also take concrete action to guard against building collapse. Our building engineers must use their qualification to supervise constructions very well and insist that the right things be done.”
Sen Useni also said Community leaders equally have their own roles to play in ensuring building safety.
“They should educate their people to lay solid foundations that will carry the weight of structures they are putting up. People may cry and say that foundations are expensive, but what can be more costly than the lives we lose whenever buildings collapse? We must do all we can to save lives.”
Sen Useni also visited the family compound of the owner of the collapsed building who lost his life in the incident late Alh. Kabiru Nalele at Layin Dan Karfala in Jos city. They were received by a family member Alh Saleh Lawan Nalele.
Afterward, Sen Useni led his entourage to visit a party elder in Jos North Alh Abubakar Agege who has been seriously ill at home.
