PLASIEC Partners IFES for Credible Local Government Elections in Plateau State

June 20, 2024 – Jos, Plateau State

In a significant move towards ensuring credible local government elections, the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) has joined hands with the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES). This collaboration was formally initiated during a meeting held at the PLASIEC headquarters, marking a new chapter in the state’s electoral process.

In his opening address, Hon. Plangji Daniel Cishak warmly welcomed the IFES delegation, highlighting the crucial role they have played in Nigeria’s electoral processes since 1998. He expressed the commission’s readiness to embrace new ideas and innovations to improve the state’s electoral system over the next five years.

“We are delighted to have you here at this critical point in time,” said Hon. Cishak. “Our team is passionate about success and committed to enhancing this institution’s standards. We are open to ideas, cooperation, and funding to make this institution profitable and effective.”

Mr. Seiay Jah, Country Director of IFES, echoed the sentiments of collaboration and support. He acknowledged the longstanding partnership between IFES and Nigerian electoral bodies, emphasizing the importance of the project aimed at enhancing electoral processes in six states, including Plateau.

“Our goal is to model good elections in Nigeria, and if successful, Plateau State will serve as an example for others,” stated Mr. Jah. He also praised the political will demonstrated by Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, which has been instrumental in supporting the conduct of credible local government elections.

Both parties underscored the significance of building a cohesive team that includes both management and permanent staff. This approach ensures that the improvements and innovations implemented during the current tenure will be sustainable and effective in the long term.

Mr. Jah highlighted the importance of including permanent staff in the discussions, recognizing their role in carrying forward the positive changes initiated by the commission. “It’s very notable that you are including them in this discussion,” he said, reinforcing the need for a collaborative effort at all levels.

Barr. Pam Gyang Davou, Secretary of PLASIEC, expressed gratitude to IFES for choosing to partner with PLASIEC. He assured the IFES delegation that the commission, under the guidance of the governor and its committed members, is poised to conduct the best elections in the history of Plateau State.

“With the posture of the Governor, the chairman, and commission members, PLASIEC is about to conduct the best elections in Plateau’s history,” said Barr. Pam. He also reassured the staff that their contributions are valued and that they can look forward to a fulfilling tenure at PLASIEC.
