PRESS RELEASE
UNIJOS SECURES FULL ACCREDITATION FOR 17 OF ITS ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES
The University of Jos has secured full accreditation for Seventeen (17) of its programmes recently assessed by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The National Universities Commission (NUC) has the statutory mandate to accredit academic programmes in all Nigerian Universities. Pursuant to its mandate and in consonance with the provisions of the approved Government guidelines, initial accreditation of a new programme is held after the programme has run for two academic sessions following approval for the establishment of the programme. Thereafter, the Commission accredits the approved Programmes as and when due. The NUC had understaken an Accreditation exercise for Twenty (20) Programmes in the University in November/December 2017 following which a summary of the results as contained in the Technical Report for the Programmes visited, was communicated to the University through the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Seddi Sebastian Maimako.
The Technical Report which was signed by the NUC’s Director of Accreditation, Dr. N.B. Saliu recalled that between November and December 2017, the National Universities Commission had dispatched a high powered Accreditation Team to the University of Jos along with other Universities with the aim of examining some of its Programmes.
The Team visited six (6) Faculties including Education, Environmental Sciences, Medicine, Pharmacy, Science and Social Sciences.
At the end of the rigorous exercise, the Team prepared and submitted its findings to the NUC’s Directorate of Accreditation, the summary of which has just been released by the NUC. According to the Technical Report, the NUC determined that the University had a very good performance based on which it was able to secure full accreditation for Seventeen (17) Programmes out of the Twenty (20) Programmes assessed by the Accreditation Team. Three programmes were however, denied accreditation.
The Programmes given full accreditation are Guidance and Counselling, English Education, French Education, History Education, Religious Studies, Social Studies, Special Education, Architecture and Building. Others include Medicine and Surgery, Pharmacy, Computer Science, Geology, Microbiology, Zoology, Geography and Planning as well as Mass Communication. The Three (3) Courses denied accreditation are Industrial Chemistry, Chemistry and Botany.
