UNIJOS Engineering Celebrates Milestone: 263 Graduates Inducted in Historic “Journey of Resilience“- DM Long’gul reports.
The Aliyu Akwe Doma Indoor Theatre was filled with a sense of historic triumph today as the University of Jos (UNIJOS) Faculty of Engineering held its 1st Oath Taking and Induction Ceremony.
The event marked a definitive end to what was described as “four decades of non-existence” for the faculty, officially transitioning 263 new graduates into the professional engineering fold.

The ceremony, conducted in partnership with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), served as both a formal rite of passage and a celebration of the university’s burgeoning engineering legacy.
In a stirring keynote address titled “Closing the Four Decades of Non-Existence of Faculty Engineering at the University of Jos: The Journey of Resilience, Perseverance, and Endurance,” the Pioneer Dean, Engr. Prof. Stephen J. Mallo, chronicled the arduous path to the faculty’s establishment.

Prof. Mallo revealed that while the university was established decades ago, the Faculty of Engineering only became a reality following a long process that began in earnest in 2008. Since its first accreditation by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in 2013 and the construction of its dedicated building in 2018, the faculty has now contributed a cumulative total of 663 engineers to the Nigerian economy across five graduating sets.
“Today marks your formal transition from students to professionals; from theory to responsibility; and from learning engineering to practicing engineering,”
Prof. Mallo Charge to the Inductees
The atmosphere was one of solemnity as the “Class of 2025,” alongside graduates from the 2019–2024 sessions, stood to take their professional oaths. The induction covered four key departments:Civil Engineering Electrical & Electronics Engineering Mechanical Engineering Mining Engineering
The graduates were reminded that their new titles as “Graduate Engineers” (NSE) and “Pupil Engineers” (COREN) come with significant societal weight. Prof. Mallo outlined a 10-point charge, emphasizing that engineering is one of the few professions where “society places lives directly in your hands.” He urged the new engineers to prioritize Professional Ethics, Sustainable Economic Skills, and National Development, noting that they must become “economic multipliers” to help reduce graduate unemployment.
The ceremony also highlighted the faculty’s future-forward vision. Prof. Mallo encouraged the university management to consider mounting new programs to address modern global challenges, including:Renewable and New Energy Systems (RNES) Artificial Intelligence Engineering Aerospace and Data Engineering Biomedical and Environmental Engineering
The event held personal significance for the Pioneer Dean, as it coincided with the year of his formal exit from the university. Prof. Mallo will reach the mandatory retirement age of 70 in July 2026, making this induction a “heart-soothing” capstone to a distinguished career dedicated to building the faculty from the ground up.
As the ceremony concluded, the hall erupted in cheers from parents, faculty members, and the newly minted engineers, signaling a new era for technical education in Plateau State and Nigeria at large.
