The University of Jos, UNIJOS, on Tuesday inducted 39 graduates of Medical Laboratory Scientists amidst tears because of the demise of seven students from the faculty who were victims of the May 20 Jos twin bomb explosions.

The seven students killed in the blast were named as Lydia, Milly, Michael, Francisca, Doris, Vivian and Wungak. The institution, in conjunction with the department of Medical Laboratory Science and the graduates, paid tributes to the fallen students. A minute silence was observed for the repose of the soul of the departed students in what was the first since the inception of the school.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Hayward Mafuyai, in a speech said the graduating scientists were fully certified, both in character and in learning. He urged them to practice their chosen profession in accordance with the ethics of the profession. “As you take the oath, I want to counsel you all that a good name is a product of rare achievement.”

On his part, the Registrar Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria, Anthony Emeribe, admonished the newly inducted laboratory scientists to use their newly acquired skills to proffer solutions to health challenges. “You are not meant to kill, we are not killers. Proffer solutions to health challenges,” Mr. Emeribe said. The students swore among other things to treat people fairly and on equitable basis.
