The University of Jos has appealled to the Federal Government to sustain the ongoing Agricultural Transformation Agenda (ATA), saying it has so far had a tremendous impact in the sector.
Managing Director of University of Jos Consultancy Limited, Mr. Meshach Chindaba, made this known at the monthly technical review of its seed multiplication farms in Gagnam, Langtang South Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Chindaba said that the ATA through its Growth Enhance Scheme (GES) has supported many farmers with inputs and encouraged even institutions like the University of Jos to venture into agriculture.
“We appreciate what the government is doing in the ATA, it has made us to believe that we are going to get the benefits of going into agriculture activity. He maintained.
“We want all programmes under the (ATA) to be sustained because we don’t want to start farming this year and end this year.

“We want the sustenance of all the incentive packages and to be taken into consideration in terms of inputs. He stressed.
According to him, before venturing into the project, they contacted the Plateau Agricultural Development Programme (PADP), for advice and it advised them to go into seed multiplication farming.
“The venture was undertaken based on the need generate seeds for farmers in line with the ATA which he said would boost the crops value chain and enhance food sufficiency/security.
Chindaba added that the UniJos Consultancy Limited cultivated 10 hectares of maize seed multiplication and 10 hectares of rice multiplication with the intention 40 hectares each of the crops.
Speaking on behalf of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Prof. Hayward Mafuyai, Director Advancement Office of the institution, Mr. Yakubu Gomos, said the institution has very serious interest in agriculture.
He maintained that it was for such recognition that the University established the Faculties of Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture.
