The role of the building profession has been described as pivotal to the recent city renewal efforts in Plateau State, especially the Executive Order No. 003. This was disclosed by the Secretary to the Government of Plateau State, Arch Samuel Nanchang Jatau at the 8th Conference and Annual General Meeting of the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) Plateau State Chapter which held at Crest Hotel, Jos.
“The Building Profession is a profession of integrity, so it comes down to individuals that is why associations like this, they help to build each other. As an individual it is up to you to determine your mix on the site. The Builder supervises the construction and if he is not able to ensure that the standards are kept and he compromises, then you have cases of collapsed buildings like that one we had at All Saints Academy a few months ago where unfortunately we lost so many children, we don’t want these kinds of scenes.”
Arch Jatau emphasized that though there were many reasons for building collapse, compromise on site is chief amongst them.
“There are other reasons for building collapse but the very common one is compromise on site. So, as a builder, your integrity matters alot.”
Arch Jatau further stressed the place of the Builder in the Executive Order No. 003 in the state, while also promising that Government was looking into the implementing the Building Code. “The place of the Builder is first of all to stand on the pedestal of integrity, to stand on the pedestal of standards, that is why we said Plateau State is looking forward to domesticating the building code. Of course we took it to suit our own situation here on the Plateau. I here that is already in progress, so we will go and see where it is, we will dust it up and see what can be done about it.”.
Earlier in their separate remarks the National President of the NOIB Bldr (Sir) Alderton Ewa FNIOB represented by Prof Yohanna Izang and the Chairman of the Plateau State Chapter Bldr Adedeji Adeleye Paul FNIB both emphasized the need for continuous professional training while also ensuring that the endpoint of their work, buildings are safe, sustainable and compliant with the regulatory frameworks that govern the building profession.
