On 02 February 2014, the representatives of CAN, ViewPointNigeria and MOPPLAH visited Shonong –a lonely and deserted village recently attacked by Fulani herdsmen in Bachit district of Riyom LGA. The road to the village was lonely, narrow and scary. Two raging rivers had to be crossed before arriving at the isolated village. There was no sign of life on the way to the village, only the chirps and singing of birds could be heard in the distant surroundings. Even the security forces at their post in Riyom warned our reporters of the potential of an ambush or silent killing on the long lonely road.
On arrival, our reporters fought back tears as they surveyed the utter destruction, desolation and carnage meted out to the innocent people. Almost all the houses (53) were razed down and virtually all sections of the village were destroyed completely (out of 10 small settlements which make up Shonong, only 3 now exist -all the others have been destroyed). Several families were completely wiped out, and in some instances both the fathers and mothers killed and only the defenceless children were left. The expressions on the faces of the survivors, especially the children was that of hopelessness and despair –a lot of them were still traumatised by the events of 06 January 2014.
We at ViewPointNigeria and MOPPLAH have taken it as our responsibility to tell the story of the people of Shonong to the world. As such we are running a campaign tagged “Shonong in Ruins” where we shall continue to profile the village over the coming weeks. In this regards, we have obtained exclusive pictures of the village as it currently stands and have also collated the complete list of the people killed. Please find below.
