The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called off its strike in Kaduna state

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) which had earlier on announced a five-day strike against the Kaduna State government under Governor Nasir El-Rufai over its massive layoffs of staff in the state has called off the strike.

The strike had disrupted a lot of activities in Kaduna, leaving hospitals, banks, a railway station, an airport, and others closed.

The governor had during the strike, reassured the union leaders, that the move would not change his stance on layoffs.

Speaking after an emergency meeting in Kaduna on Wednesday night, the NLC National President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba however said that the strike had been called off.

It took the intervention of the federal government who waded into the war between the Kaduna State government and the union to call off the strike. On Wednesday morning, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said that the federal government and his labor and employment counterpart, Dr. Chris Ngige, had intervened to address the crisis.

“The federal government has not fold its arms and the Minister of Labor and Employment has since already intervened in the crisis between the Kaduna State government and the union. In addition, security agencies across the country have also taken precautionary measures to ensure that militants do not take advantage of this situation. In particular, I know the police have intensified patrols between Kaduna and Abuja”. The minister said.
