The quantum rise in the incidences of rape, both reported and unreported shows a dangerous trend that is leap frogging. Only some decade or years ago, rape cases were some few isolated incidences. In this part of the world, the word rape was just a mere English word to be found hidden in the dictionaries. Over a period there became a gradual diffusion of the word from the books into the sidelines of our lives. Surprisingly in recent past into present day, rape has become a mainstream word which has left its passive nature in our vocabulary to take centre stage in an active form of a terrible vice.
Without shame, with no conscience, without pity and with no gain; the rise of rape has revealed how dangerous that part of the human mind which seeks to destroy others then itself.

There is no gainsaying that in this time more than any other time in history, poverty, population explosion, corruption, broken homes and influence from the media have all helped in propelling the commodification of sex and the sexualization of women. These factors have made it possible for young and even matured women to become more active in consentual sex whether for monetary gains or purely for pleasure, yet at this time that there is abundance of ‘cheap sex’ which in itself is condemnable; many men have resulted to forcing themselves on helpless, innocent and unsuspecting women.

Be it rape or attempted rape, whether sexual assault or sexual molestation, call it sexualization or sexpreneurship; more women are daily finding themselves in danger of been forced into non consentual sex.

Unfortunately, the ever “macho-becoming” world led by moralists, religionists and extremists seem to be putting the blame only on the ladies. Most time ladies are accused for their indecent dressings only; as if hunger is an excuse for theft. While it is common knowledge that modernism has led some ladies to dress in different manners, that in itself is not and should not be an excuse or justification for rape. This fallacy is further deflated when we consider the rise in the number of toddlers and elderly women who have been raped. Clearly if provocative dressings from the ladies is the reason for rape, then no infant, toddler, or elderly woman should be victims of rape.

The quantum rise in the incidences of rape, both reported and unreported shows a dangerous trend that is leap frogging. Only some decade or years ago, rape cases were some few isolated incidences which were seldom heard of. For instance in Nigeria,  the word rape was just a mere English word to be found hidden in the dictionaries. Over a period there became a gradual diffusion of the word from the books into the sidelines of our lives. Surprisingly in recent past into present day, rape has become a mainstream word which has left its passive nature in our vocabulary to take centre stage in an active form of a terrible vice.

It is so sad that these rapists have mothers yet they chose to rape other people’s mothers. These rapists have wives but they chose to rape other people’s wives. These rapists have sisters and daughters but they demonically opted to rape other people’s sisters and daughters.

Until drastic approaches are taken, I am scared that we have a new disaster to contend with. Government must review laws on rape and repeal the part that says rape can only be said to have taken place after penetration occurs. Rapists should be subjected to psychatric tests to determine their mental state of mind that led them to such. No sane mind would indulge in such a vice.

And for the few ladies who have started a caterpillar movement of raping men, they should be stopped before they also leap frog into this dangerous trend.
