A Plateau lawmaker, Dalyop Mancha, has denied allegations that the committee on SURE-P in Plateau State diverted the funds meant for the state. Mr. Mancha, who represents Jos South at the State Assembly, said this while addressing a news conference at the Assembly complex on Tuesday in Jos. According to Mr. Mancha, who heads the Plateau State legislative adhoc committee on SURE-P, investigations conducted by the committee showed that the funds were still intact. “The funds meant for Plateau state are intact,” the legislator said; adding that the sum of N3 billion was still in the coffers of the SURE-P in the state.
He also assured that the money would be used for the purpose it was meant. There have been reports that the funds set aside for SURE-P activities in Plateau State had been diverted by those given the mandate of ensuring successful implementation of the program. The lawmaker also denied the allegation that chairman of the committee, Bulus Dareng, refused to appear before the adhoc committee to explain how and where the sum was used, and who the beneficiaries were. “Our primary concern as representatives of the people was to ensure prudent utilization of the money’s accrued to the state, which necessitated the House mandating us as a committee to make inquires on the SURE-P, not to probe those responsible in ensuring take off of the program as it was being insinuated,” Mr. Mancha said.

Mr. Mancha said the SURE-P Chairman, Bulus Dareng, was out of the country at the time they requested his attention over the allegations, but officially wrote to the house through some officials of the SURE-P executives. Mr. Mancha said Mr. Dareng had cleared the grey areas where the committee needed clarifications. The committee chairman, however, said it was concerned by the continuous delay in the take off of the program in the state especially as most states of the federation had kick started theirs with citizens already benefiting from the program.
Mr. Mancha said if implemented, 3000 skilled personnel across the 17 council areas of the state would benefit from the SURE-P program. He said the beneficiaries had already been shortlisted and given appointment letters, even as they await official commencement.
It would be recalled that ViewPointNigeria had previously reported of the probe of the government by the Plateau state house of assembly for misappropriation of the said fund. That news article can be found at:
