There was pandemonium yesterday in Jos when a soldier serving under the Special Task Force (STF) in Jos shot dead a passenger in a taxi and injured the driver. The incident occurred in the city at Anglo Jos. STF spokesman Captain Salisu Mustapha said the soldier involved has been arrested and is being interrogated at the command headquarters.

Speaking further he stated that the soldier acted when the driver of the taxi drove in a suspicious manner as he was driving against traffic. The soldier thought the driver was carrying destructive materials and was on a mission so fired a shot that pierced through the left shoulder of the driver and hit the passenger on his chest.

The STF soldier thereafter evacuated the passengers to the Jos University Teaching Hospital for treatment where the passenger died while receiving medical care. Salisu confirmed the identity of the passenger who lost his life as Mr Wagley Dauda who works as a Security staff with the University of Jos. He said the driver will be charged to court for the offence committed whenever he leaves hospital.

University of Jos through its information office released a statement stating that the deceased was indeed a staff and was on his way to the University to relieve a co-worker on duty before meeting his untimely death.
