Gunmen on Saturday evening attacked Lamba Gyambar community of Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State killing six people including a two weeks old baby, residents have said.

A resident of the community, Nuhu Musa, narrated to journalists in Jos, the state capital, on Sunday how the gunmen invaded the community.

“The attackers took us unawares,” Mr. Musa said via telephone. “We were going about our normal activities, when suddenly we began to hear sounds of gun shots from different directions of the village.”

The injured persons, according to Mr. Musa, are receiving treatment at a private hospital in Dengi, headquarters of neighbouring Kanam Local Government Area, while some of the victims in critical condition were rushed to another hospital in Bauchi.

Another witness who declined to be named for security reasons said the attack occurred at about 4:15 p.m. on Saturday.
He said the armed men invaded the village and shot sporadically. Apart from those killed and injured, many houses were also burnt, he said.

According to him, most residents have relocated to Dengi for safety.

Both men said they suspect that their attacks were from a neighbouring ethic group.

Several phone calls to the Plateau police spokesperson, Abuh Emmanuel, were unanswered.

However, a community leader in Wase, Jangle Lohbut, dismissed the claims that members of the neighbouring ethnic group carried out the attack.
“Nothing of such act could be done by our village nationals,” he told journalists on phone. “As far as I’m concerned, we have a good relationship with every tribe in Wase, so there was no reason for such act from my people.”
