News reaching ViewPointNigeria confirms that the murder of a 13-year-old girl at the Filin Sukuwa area of Jos has sparked tension in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State. Many residents were said to be fed up with the continuous incidences of kidnapping and killing in the area and came out enmasse to protest the dastardly acts said to be perpetuated in the Angwa Rogo and the Filin Sukuwa axis.

The 13-year-old girl identified as Ummi Abubakar was sent on an errant last Friday morning with a food flask by her mother to buy Masa (a local delicacy made from rice or maize), at a location close to their residence in Filin Sukuwa for her siblings to eat before going to school. However, Ummi did not return from the errant, and when several hours had passed and her siblings were delayed for school, one of the family members went to see what had held her at the Masa sellers place. The Masa seller confirmed that she did come to buy the food with a flask but shortly afterwards she returned again with a plate to buy more.

It all started on Friday morning, when the 13-year-old victim called Ummi Abubakar was sent on an errant by her mother, with a food flask to buy “Masa”, at a location close to their residence in Filin Sukuwa for her siblings to eat before going to school.

Through neighbours it was gathered that a gateman working at a nearby house, identified as Awalu, had sent Ummi to buy the Masa for him. The serve party was said to have traced her steps to Auwalu’s house and the food flask was discovered in the restroom close to the gate but neither Ummi nor the gate man could be found. Another search party was constituted to look for them. The man was later discovered and when he could not state where Ummi was, they called in the police and he was arrested.

Upon interrogation, he confessed that he was not working alone and mentioned another man, simply named Nafiu, living at Angwa Rogo and the police went and arrested him. While he would not say where Ummi was, he confessed that about two months ago, himself and other gang members had kidnapped and killed another girl at Filin Sukuwa (the girl’s body was discovered about two months ago in an uncompleted building in the area). He said they were paid N400,000 by the person who contracted them to carry out the dastardly act.

Because Awalu had started confessing, the police asked the crowd, which has started gathering to leave so that they could interrogate the two suspects. On their own the search party decided to go to the same house where the body of the other girl was discovered two months ago and after a thorough search Ummi’s body was discovered in a bucket with vital parts removed.
The entire area became charged as the residents trooped out calling for justice, saying that the cases of kidnapping and ritual killings were becoming too rampant in Angwa Rogo and Filin Sukuwa, a relatively new settlement not far from the University of Jos.

It was gathered that the arrested youths also mentioned the dealer/receiver of the vital parts; a man also said to be residing in Angwa Rogo but whose location at present was not known. When contacted, the Police Public Relation Officer for the State Police Command, DSP Felicia Anslem confirmed the incident and said the two suspects were in police net while efforts were being made to round up all the people involved in the dastardly act.
