Plateau PDP Gubernatorial Candidate Sen JT Useni has appealed to the federal government to re-open the popular Jos-based private radio station Jay-FM 101.9.
The station was closed down early March 2019 by the regulatory body National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) for allegedly breaching the Broadcasting Code.
The Management of the station has maintained that the NBC action is political.
But Sen. Useni says federal authorities should be corrective and not punitive by closing the station and throwing its staff into the Labour market for a prolonged period.
Speaking while in audience with the Management of the station on Tuesday in Jos, Sen Useni said, “People should not be afraid of the truth being promoted by the media. They should be allowed to contribute to the growth of our democracy. Those who have issues with the media should feel free to go to court rather using other government agencies to close down the stations. That is not right.”
He expressed solidarity with the Management and staff of Jay-FM, and promised to play his own part in getting station re-opened.
Earlier, Managing Director of Jay-FM Mr. Clinton Garuba briefed the PDP Governorship Candidate on the circumstances leading to the NBC taking the station off air.
He maintained that the station had not violated any of the broadcasting codes but was sealed to deprive the people of Plateau the professional and thorough election coverages associated with Jay-FM.
