Private Hospitals in Jos have raised a complain over a delay in the payment of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) monthly capitation which is paid to affected private hospitals.

The Federal Government established the NHIS in 2006, with an intention of a universal health coverage, so that all Nigerians would be covered by health insurance.

Speaking to newsmen, the Chief Medical Director of Sauki Hospital in Jos, Dr. Daniel Gana, who was also a former Chairman of Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Plateau State Branch, said Federal Government pledged to ensure that more Nigerians come under the cover of NHIS monthly capitation under the National Health Insurance Scheme Act Cap N42, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, which is aimed at providing easy access to healthcare for all Nigerians at an affordable cost through various prepayment systems.

ViewPointNigeria gathered that the HMOs (Health Maintenance Organizations) are always paid upfront by the Federal Government every quarter, but since February 24, 2017, most hospitals nationwide have not been paid the monthly capitation, therefore most hospitals are just carrying out humanitarian services.

His counterpart at the Era Clinic and Hospital, at Apata in Jos North, Dr. Tajudeen Yusuff, corroborated the issue, saying they had just received February payment. He, however, explained that affected hospitals are not paid at the same time.
