20th JULY 2017 –
PEOPLES DEMOCRATIC PARTY (PDP) PLATEAU STATE CHAPTER.
NO.20/22, YAKUBU GOWON WAY, JOS.
PRESS RELEASE
Pursuant to our resolve and commitment to ensure that democracy is deeply rooted in our nation, -and to compel the plateau state government to pursue and uphold democratic tenets, the people democratic party (PDP) in plateau state approached the state high court, jos yesterday July 19, 2017, seeking to restrain the plateau state government from going ahead to appoint yet another set of transition committees for the local government councils.
Our legal team duly filed the documents containing our prayers in the registry at the state high court. To our greatest dismay, when we approached the court today in pursuit of the filed papers, we discovered that they were nowhere to be -found. The staff of the registry also disappeared into thin air.
We consider the inglorious disappearance of the papers a deliberate and desperate attempt to further deny the good people of plateau state the fruits of democracy at the third tier of government, which has been the hallmark of the Lalong led -administration since July 2015 when he sacked democratically elected local government council officials.
This anarchy as orchestrated by the APC – led administration in seeming connivance with the state judiciary is unacceptable, and shall be resisted by all lovers of democracy on the plateau.
It is our firm believe that the government that rode on the back of CHANGE shouldn’t be seen to be surviving on impunity.
While the Lalong led administration may yet have its way, and goes ahead to swear –in another set of undemocratic leaders of the third tier of government for another term of an endless tenure, we are sure that this act of illegality will not continue ad –infinitum. There will surely be an end to it.
We are aware that there is no law of the plateau state house of assembly supporting this action. We therefore ask: on what basis is the house sitting to confirm the purported list of nominees from the APC government? We call on PDP members of the house to dissociate themselves from this further rape on democracy in the state.
We beckon on PLASIEC to fix a date for local government elections in the state for individuals and political parties to test their popularity or otherwise in a free and fair poll.
Meantime, we call on all our members, supporters and lovers of democracy to remain calm, even in the face of this political rascality and perpetual affront on the rule of law and democracy.
Signed;
John T. Akans, ksm
State publicity secretary.
