There was a mild drama at the International Conference Centre which is the venue for the collation of presidential results from states.
Former Minister of Niger Delta, Mr Godsday Orubebe who is a Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) agent made an observation before the commencement of collation and accused the electoral body of bias.
Orubebe accused Profesor Attahiru Jega, the Chairman of INEC of ignoring the protests of the party regarding results from Kano, Katsina, Jigawa and Kaduna. He said the electoral body set up an investigative body to look into complaints of the All Progressive Congress (APC) against the presidential result of Rivers state but refused to look into the complaints of PDP.
There was pandemonium in the venue for about 15 minutes until calm was restored when another agent of PDP requested Jega to address the issue. Professor Jega addressed the issue and acknowledged that he told PDP to approach the secretariat.
Returning officers from Ebonyi, Niger, Lagos, Bayelsa, Gombe, Cross Rivers and Rivers state afterwards announced results for the respective states.
The APC agent asked the commission Chairman to explain why Rivers state was about to be announced and what caused the delay. Jega replied and said that the reason for the delay was as a result of investigation into the complaint by APC regarding the state result.
APC’s Muhammadu Buhari at the moment has 10,454,137 votes followed by his closest rival incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan with 9,953,432 votes.
So far the results for Ekiti, Ogun, Enugu, Kogi, Osun, Ondo, FCT, Oyo, Nasarawa, Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, Kwara, Kaduna, Anambra, Abia, Akwa Ibom, Imo, Plateau, Ebonyi, Niger, Lagos, Bayelsa, Gombe, Cross Rivers and Rivers states have been collated. The collation will resume after a 30 minutes break.
