The Plateau State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) on Tuesday said the state government would flush out unqualified teachers in private schools in the state.

Prof. Mathew Sule, the Executive Chairman of the board, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos that the measure was necessitated by government’s concern about the state’s position on the nation’s education index.

According to him, Plateau is not competing favourably in the education sector with other states in the federation.

“Teaching should be the preserve of only those qualified, who should have a minimum of National Certificate in Education (NCE).

“This, we will enforce not only in public schools but also in the private ones. If you want to teach in either of the schools, you must have the qualification,” he said.

The SUBEB chairman also said that the board would partner with Teacher Training Institutions such as the College of Education, Gindiri, Federal College of Education, Pankshin, and the University of Jos, to upgrade the capacity of teachers.

“We will ensure that through training and retraining of teachers in terms of subject content and pedagogical skills,’’ he said.

Sule said that in spite of dwindling resources of the state, the state government intended to recruit more teachers to reduce the pressure on the few available teachers.

NAN reports that Sule was appointed chairman of the board on Aug. 17.
