A youth group in Plateau has berated the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for disenfranchising citizens of the state who are mainly supporters of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP). The group known as Plateau Youth Vanguard (PYV) stated that INEC has refused to issue the Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVC) to most of the electorates.

Chairman of PYV, Mr Joseph Goyit while speaking to journalists in Jos decried the unbalanced distribution of PVCs in the 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and state in general. He added that over 520 polling units in the state were earlier marked as zero polling units after the 2011 elections. The electorates in the areas were advised to register in the continuous voters’ registration in November last year of which they did but are yet to receive their PVCs.

Goyit added that a significant number of electorates in communities like Jenta Adamu, Jos Jarawa, Naraguta A and B in Jos North and Giring, Gyel A and B, Shen Vwang, Zawang A and B in Jos South and some communities in Riyom LGAs were yet to receive their PVCs despite several calls to INEC in Jos. He added that is the discrepancy is evident across the state.

The PYV Chairman said that the action of INEC could deny eligible electorates the opportunity of voting in the fort coming elections as the group understood that some of the PVCs were yet to be delivered to the state. He said that the people of the state will be forced to use their Temporary Voters Card (TVC) if INEC refuses to distribute all PVCs. Goyit said that Plateau people will not sit by and allow the failures of INEC to affect the eligibility of electorates to vote.
