In its maiden edition of “Digest of happenings & events on the Plateau”, ViewPointNigeria has, summarised key happenings and events of the month of July for the benefit of our readers.
In general, the month of July, unlike January, February and March which were relatively peaceful, saw significant disturbance to the general tranquility of the state. The lowest point of events was the unfortunate murder of Saf Ron Kulere by suspected Fulani militia on 18th July 2016.
Below is a chronological order of happenings from 1st July 2016 to the 30th July 2016.
- 1st July 2016 – Drama in Plateau House of Assembly over tenure elongation for transition committee chairmen
- 2nd July 2016 – Free El-Zakzaky protest organised by Shiites in Jos.
- 3rd July 2016 – Edward Pwajok becomes Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN)
- 9th July 2016 – Eid El Fitr celebration across Plateau and Nigeria, even as extra-day approved because of non-sighting of moon
- 9th July 2016 – Dariye and other lawmakers endorse Lalong’s position on cattle ranching
- 12th July 2016 – Plateau secures loan of N14.1 billion from FG
- 13th July 2016 – Lalong clears March and April salary arrears with part of N5.2 billion bailout funds released by FG.
- 18th July 2016 – HRH Saf Ron Kulere ambushed and assassinated by suspected herdsmen
- 19th July 2016 – Lalong, Jang, Dariye, Solomon Maren and others condemns in strong terms murder of Saf Ron Kulere.
- 20th July 2016 – Bokkos youth go on rampage in reaction to killing of HRH Saf Ron/Kulere
- 20th July 2016 – Sultan visits Jos to sympathize over murder of Saf Ron/Kulere, cautions against blaming herdsmen
- 21st July 2016 – Further attacks by suspected herdsmen in Sha village Bokkos leaves 2 people dead
- 21st July 2016 – Security agents shoot and kill 2 youths in Bokkos town as protests turn violent
- 22nd July 2016 – Plateau signs MoU with firm for 32MW hydro-plant
- 23rd July 2016 – China and Plateau sign 6 MoUs
- 27th July 2016 – Gunmen attack Unijos VCs house, kill police officer
- 28th July 2016 – Maj Gen Rogers Ibe Nicholas takes over as commander of operation Safe Haven
Generally, the month of July has witnessed significant disturbance to the peace and tranquility of Plateau state. However, this is in complete contrast to the peace enjoyed in most for most of the past 1 year.
