The Plateau State Association, UK under the distinguished leadership of its president, Mrs Josephine Ibrahim has waded into the “grazing colonies” debate which has pervaded the Plateau-sphere for the last few months.
Contributing to the debate, the President acknowledged the genuine efforts of Governor Lalong at solving the raging Fulani attacks conundrum. She commended him for his bold strides in taking the bull-by-the-horn, and proposing ideas which should help reduce the attacks.
She however cautions that a quick and rash decision to key into the proposed “Grazing Colonies” concept as prescribed by the Federal Government may end up being dangerous and calamitous as opposed to being helpful. She noted that the land donation angle of the concept may have implications far reaching, especially given the fact that attacks still persist.
Making the submission, the president notes that the polity in Plateau has already been heated to feverish heights and that the implementation of such a policy, could lead to the eruption of another orgy of violence.
She therefore advised that Governor Lalong institutes a public consultation to gauge the appetite of citizens on the highly contentious matter.
She also requested that the Plateau State Government makes clear its position on the matter to curtail the peddling of propaganda and mis-truths which are heating up and charging the polity.

==================================================================
The Plateau State Association (PSA) UK observes with great concern the raging “Grazing Colonies” debate and herdsmen attacks that have overtaken our polity.
PSA UK expresses immense displeasure at the worsening of the attacks –especially in the light of how they have ravaged our villages and permanently changed our communal “Plateau way of life”.
Whilst we applaud the Plateau State Government’s effort of trying to find a quick and lasting solution to the killings, we advise that care be taken so as not to implement measures which may further exacerbate the current challenges.
We observe that there appears to be an outright rejection of the “Grazing Colonies” idea by the generality of the Plateau public –and as such we appeal to our amiable Governor (Rt. Hon. Barrister Simon Lalong) to re-consider his stance of keying into the idea.
There is no doubt that Governor Lalong, being the “C-in-C” of Plateau, owes it a duty to find a lasting solution –as such we fully understand his commitment and rationale.
However considering the sensitivities of the land donation side of things, vis-à-vis the killings, disenfranchisement, and angst, we consider it unwise to proceed with the idea as proselytised by FG.
To that end, PSA UK appeals that Governor Lalong opens up a public consultation (with traditional rulers, community leaders and citizens) so as to gauge the pulse of the people –ahead of a final decision being taken.
We also appeal that the Governor’s initial ideas of ranching all cattle (as a private enterprise, not through Government intervention of land donation) also be explored.
Finally, we call on PLSG to make clear its position on the “grazing matter” so as to check the peddling of falsehoods and mis-truths which only serve to charge and heat up the polity.
We do not doubt the commitment of Governor Lalong in the task of governance and nation-building –especially given his partnership with the PSA UK in the area of bringing succour and relief to victims of attacks on the Plateau. We know his actions mean well, but we consider that the polity has already been heated to levels where implementing such a polarising policy may do more harm than good.
Long live Plateau State!
Signed
Chinnan Mclean
