Plateau state PDP delegates will be queuing up today to vote the candidate that will represent the party in the gubernatorial elections in 2015. Plateau people have waited eagerly for this day as they watched the debate for and against the candidates some of whom have contested the seat before.

The contenders for the exalted seat under the platform of the party include; Mr Ignatius Longjan, Senator Gyang Pwajok, Senator Victor Lar, Sir Fidelis Tapgun, Dr Haruna Dabin, Architect John Alkali, Engineer Jimmy Cheto, Professor Longmas Wapmuk, Professor Sonny Tyoden, Honourable John Clark, Mr John Sheni, Mr Godfrey Miri, Mr Hezekiah Dimka, Mr Chris Bature, Mr Nanpon Pyennap, Mr Bitrus Nabasu and Mr Kemi Nshe.

Analysts and pundits have narrowed the race between Mr Longjan the current deputy Governor who hails from the southern zone and Sen Gyang Pwajok who is the senator representing the Northern zone at the Senate.

It is believed that Governor Jonah Jang who is also from the Northern zone endorsed Pwajok while Longjan is favoured by people from the southern zone and others who believe in zoning. Those canvassing for Longjan also say that he has been a loyal deputy and should be allowed to continue with the accomplishments of the present administration.

The campaigns for the position has pitched people of the state against each other with some insisting on zoning back to the southern zone because they believe no one from the zone has occupied the position since Nasarawa state was carved from Plateau in 1996. Others believe that candidates should be allowed to contest regardless of the zone they come from. Elders and youths of the state have issued statements defending the diverse opinions being canvassed for the candidates.

Plateau state is a strong hold for the ruling PDP that has governed the state since the return to democracy in 1999. The people of the state have never been alienated on issues regarding the selection of gubernatorial candidates as it is presently. Observers have watched with amazement the way the state is getting divided based on affiliation while others are confused on the direction at which their support should lie. Some people have threatened to support opposition parties if the wishes of the populace are trampled upon at the primaries.

The obligation lies on the party delegates who will be gathering to vote the party flag bearer even though some believe they were handpicked to support a candidate. Plateau people will definitely know the candidate later and decide on what next to do.
