The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Plateau, on Sunday, said it had acquired security gadgets to safeguard motor parks across the state.

The union’s Chairman in the state, Mr Danjuma Jeji, said in Jos that the measure was aimed at securing commuters and property at the parks.

Jeji said ”the union acquired the gadgets since parks have become targets of attacks”, adding that it had also commenced training of its members in the use of the gadgets.

The chairman added that the decision was in compliance with the directive given by the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Chris Olakpe, to fortify motor parks and markets, after a meeting with union officials.

It would be recalled that the commissioner of police in the state had directed the union to acquire metal detectors and mirror screening equipment that would be used at the gates of parks to screen passengers before entering the parks.

The commissioner said the police command in the state was ready to teach the union members how to operate the gadgets to guard against attacks.

The union chairman, therefore, said ”as I speak, almost all the motor parks in the state have acquired the gadgets and those that have yet to buy will do so before the end of this week.

”The items include gadgets to screen passengers and vehicles before entering the parks, metal detectors and bomb detection devices.”

The NURTW chairman also confirmed that some union members had been trained on how to use the equipment.

He said ”some union members have been trained on how to use the devices by men of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

”We are also planning to organise a workshop where more people would be trained on how to handle the gadgets.”

He added that aside the gadgets, security men have also been drafted to work with union members in various parks in case of any unwarranted situation.

According to him, the security operatives are in plain cloth to avoid being identified by motorists, passengers and even union officials.

”Only a few persons know them because of security reasons and we want to continue to keep that as secretive as possible,” he said.
