Plateau Government says it will soon conduct elections into various positions in the 17 local government councils in the state.
Mr Joe Bukar, Southern Zone Legislative Liaison Officer to Gov. Samuel Lalong, told journalists on Wednesday in Jos that government had set machinery in motion for free and fair council polls.
“I want to assure you that since the State House of Assembly has passed the two bills which had hitherto hindered the conduct of the elections, the road is clear.
“By constituting the state electoral body and the proposed amendment bills for local government law and that of the State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC), it is evident that we are ready for the election.
“As a responsible government, we want to give people at the grassroots ample opportunity to participate in government; we have set machinery in motion to ensure free and fair elections at the local level,’’ Bukar said.
A lawmaker in the state, Mr Ibrahim Baba-Hassan, had said that having passed the two bills, the Assembly would not be responsible for any delay in conducting the polls.
Baba-Hassan, the House Committee Chairman on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, urged government to expedite action on the conduct of the elections.
