News reaching View Point Nigeria indicates that the deputy Speaker of the House, Yusuf Gagdi said the Plateau State House of Assembly plans to cancel the law establishing the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLAISEC), in the first quarter of 2017.

Gagdi stated that the house would focus on harmonizing the two existing local government laws which were responsible for the extension of the tenure of the local governments at the request of Governor Lalong, to give the house enough time to amend the laws.

In July 2015, Governor Lalong dissolved the elected local government committee chairmen and replaced them with management committee chairmen, pending when another local government election is carried out.

While speaking at the weekend, Gagdi stated that the bill to cancel the local government law was presented to the House before the break.

The deputy speaker said the House intended to look into the law and cancel it, so as to give the commission the same powers that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has because of the vague nature of the law establishing PLASIEC.

“We want PLASIEC to have absolute control of local government (LG) elections,” he added.
