Plateau Govt. donates N23m worth of relief materials to IDPs in Miango

Plateau state Government yesterday donated relief materials worth N23 million to Internally Displaced Persons in Miango, Bassa Local Government of the state. It would recalled that over one hundred people were recently killed and properties destroyed by unknown gunmen in some villages in the area. Gov Simon Lalong of Plateau who flagged off the distribution of the materials said that distributing the materials with heavy hearts because of those that died in the attacks. Lalong represented by Mr Joseph Lengman, Director General, Plateau Peace Building Agency said that the state was going through trying time but will surely overcome it. He said “I commiserate with the people of Bassa over the dastardly and heinous acts perpetrated on the people by the evil. “The tough times and all its challenges represents a test of character and leadership at all levels and I am confident that that we will emerge stronger. “Peace and security is paramount to this administration and what has happened a major set back but government remain unwavering in its resolve.

“We are doing everything within the law to avoid a repeat of the ugly incident and perpetrators apprehended and penalised,” he assured. The governor said that the materials were meant to alleviate the sufferings of victims and warned against diversion According to him, anybody caught subverting government’s efforts meant to bring succour to the people would be decisively dealt with. Mrs Sarah Bali, Transition Committee Chairman, Bassa Local Government appreciated state government for its prompt response in providing relief materials to the victims. Bali also thanked the people of Irigiwe, the tribe the suffered the attacks for maintaining peace despite the provocation. Alhaji Alhassan Barde, Executive Secretary, Plateau State Emergency Management (SEMA) alos condemned and described the attack as
. Barde appealed to well meaning individuals, Non Governmental Organisations (NGO’s) and other corporate bodies to assist the victims as government alone cannot meet all their needs.
The executive secretary that materials donated were food and non materials like building materials. The food materials included bags of rice, bags of beans, noodles, sugar, vegetable and palm oils, beverages and toiletries among others. While the non food materials were some beddings including mattresses, mats blankets as well as clothing.
Others materials donated through agency were building materials which included bags of cement, wood for roofing, zinc, and nails among others.
Mr Sunday Abdu, National President, Iregwe Development Association described as unfortunate the situation where monies meant for development were now been channeled towards d purchase of relief materials.
