Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State has attributed the non-conduct of local government elections by his ad­ministration to the lapses in the law establishing the Plateau State In­dependent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC).

Lalong stated this in Jos when he signed two bills passed by Plateau State House of Assembly into laws.

He said that there were many flaws in the extant law making it difficult to conduct an election ac­ceptable by the people of the state.

In fact, Lalong described the law as out-dated, adding that “we have amended the law and ad-dressed the flaws and PLASIEC can now go ahead to conduct the council elec­tions.”

Lalong said: “Local government elections are very key to people and no responsible government will deliberately refuse to conduct elections at that level of govern­ment.

“This is because the people elected at that level of government like the councillors are very close to the people at the grassroots,” he said.

The governor boasted that his All Progressives Congress (APC) was prepared to participate in the elections and urged the umpire to hold the polls without further delay.

Lalong further stated that the new PLASIEC law has provided for the creation of Development Areas, which, he promised the people during his campaign.

He announced that the Devel­opment Areas would be created after the council elections.
