Responding to the agitations by both the Southern and Northern Senatorials zones to produce the next governor, PDP stakeholders of the Central zone are demanding that they produce the next governor.
In a communique issued after a lengthy meeting in Pankshin town, the stakeholders argue that since all three zones have had a shot at the government house, the next cycle of rotation should commence from the central zone.
The communiqué which was read by the PDP national vice chairman, North Central, Mr. Yusuf Tokit, stated that since all the three zones had occupied the governorship seat, the zoning formula should commence from the central zone.
This development throws an interesting mix to the already complex political dynamics in Plateau, where all the zones are claiming to be in line for the gubernatorial shot.
Several candidates have already emerged in the running for the slot in the central zone, these include – Mr. Hezekiah Dimka, Prof. Tyoden, Mr. Daniel Kutchin, Bagudu Hirse, Prof. Shedrach Best (yet to fully declare interest), Mr. Haruna Dabin (yet to fully declare interest). Unverified reports from Mangu last week, suggested that elders of Mangu LGA were said to have sought to provide a united front ahead of the 2015 elections and were said to have selected Prof. Tyoden as their sole candidate.
It would be recalled that the Southern zone, through several umbrella bodies have come out to state that, for the spirit of fairness, the gubernatorial seat should go full cycle, having began in the Central and subsequently going to Northern zone. Certain individuals in the Southern zone also argue that in the current dispensation (i.e., from 1999), they have not produced a governor and that it was therefore their turn. They argue that the tenures of Chief Solomon Lar in the first republic and Mr. Fidelis Tapgun in the third republic were all during other dispensations which do not count, and that the combined number of year that they have governed does not exceed 5 years.
In the Northern senatorial zone, a very vocal group called the Plateau North Political Front has come out on the political scene arguing for the retention of the gubernatorial seat in the North Central. Their central argument hinges on the fact that all zones have produced a governor and that the next cycle of leadership should commence where it ended.
All these arguments and counter arguments are shaping up, quite an interesting gubernatorial race in 2015. Many political analyst however argue that, if political aliances and sacrifices are not made, then PDP may lose the state, in a similar fashion to what happen in Nasarawa state where a state that had traditionally voted PDP for several years was ultimately won by the CPC of Gov. Tanko Almakura.
