Sunny Tyoden was former lecturer and Vice Chancellor of the university of Jos, before joining active politics in the last decade.

He twice contested for the primaries of the senate in the Central Senatorial zone, losing to Ibrahim Nasir Mantu and Joshua Dariye.

He then ran for the APC Governorship primaries under the Banner of the APC in 2014, losing to Simon Lalong. Who ultimately picked him as his choice for deputy governorship.
