Pankshin, June 1, 2016 – Members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Pankshin branch, on Wednesday took up the initiative of community service to sandfill potholes on highways in Pankshin
Reports reaching us suggest that the union mobilised its members with bags of cement, wheel barrows, shovels, sand and water for the community service.
The Chairman of the union, Mr Ayuba Tungakah, told journalists that the exercise was aimed at saving lives of innocent commuters and motorists.
“We are so concerned about the wanton loss of lives on these highways due to the numerous potholes, which are also part of the causes of road crashes.
“Unspecified numbers of our members had been having accidents on these bad roads, and we felt we should do something drastic to save the situation before more lives are lost.
“We contributed money among ourselves and also solicited for assistance from spirited individuals, who willingly gave us bags of cement and money toward this gesture, “ the chairman said.
Tungakah stated that the union was aware of the challenges the federal and state governments were facing in fixing the highways.
“We felt we should not wait for them but help ourselves and others, “ he added.
He expressed the hope that by the time they were through with fixing the Pankshin – Kanke and Pankshin – Pushit roads, the rate of accidents would drastically reduce.
The NURTW chairman called on motorists to desist from speeding and over loading on the roads to avoid accidents.
He called on other members of the union to take a cue from them to make the highways motorable and safe for motorists. (NAN)
